Over the past 2 years, we’ve run out of referrals and opportunities to pick “low hanging fruit.” Our lead magnets aren’t working, and our sign-ups, leads and clients have fallen away.


We wake up to Toto’s incessant barking and suddenly realize in full technicolor glory that our customer journey is broken and our lead funnel needs fixing! Let’s “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” of the customer journey in your business.


If your business is Oz, we might say that Dorothy and her companions are a little bit like you. Some time ago, you followed a carefully laid pathway to move you forward in your quest to help others. You probably followed that yellow brick road as far as it would take you, with courage, intellect, and heart. You offered your gifts, your services, your products…


The whirlwind has done its job. If you were able to pivot with it, clicking your heels may be enough. If you’re still spinning, you need to shift perspectives FAST.


You now need to become the wizard.

As the wizard, you understand who your people are, separately as individuals (persona) and together in groups (niche). You understand what they value, and why they chose to take that first step, then that second, and so on.


Until they reach their destination: the Emerald City.








Your clients navigate a hero’s journey to come to a buy-in, a purchase, a sale. There’s a calling to step forward, and they answer it. They follow the path. They overcome obstacles. They identify problems in need of solutions. Eventually, they reach a point of transformation and commitment. If your funnel is working, they say “Yes!” to the solution, and to themselves. They gratefully receive the gifts that result from their willingness to make the journey.


Behind the curtain in any successful wizard’s business, there is a customer journey map.


A customer journey map is a visual representation of your customer's pathway, “the yellow brick road.” As the wizard, it can be helpful to know where they are in the process of their trek. After all, you have traveled the pathway before them. You know what they need next. One step at a time. Until they find you, your product or offer. They find the solution to their problem.


If there is a gap in your customer's journey, they can be lost in the forest of indecision. Minding those gaps - where your marketing and sales program breaks down - provides an opportunity for you to provide helpful information or fill that gap.


Enter, Good Witch Glinda, with your dancing munchkins, sparkling advice, or offer of a product or service!


As in any journey, the hero must pass through stages along the storyline in order to successfully complete their mission.


In the customer journey, it’s important to plot the 8 stages in the buying process: awareness, interest, evaluation, conviction, decision, action, purchase, and loyalty. These stepping stones can help you identify what stage your customer is in their personal process so you can respond to their needs.


As our old nemesis the Wicked Witch of the West demonstrates, talking apple trees and flying monkeys are powerful persuaders, but ONLY if deployed at the exact right moment to best reach Dorothy and her companions with her targeted message.

As the wizard, you can become a trusted guide. Speak to your ideal clients and their companions and prepare them for the challenges which face them. Map the journey without negating the significance of the experience which lies ahead. Offer the travelers the change they seek, whether it’s in the inner or outer landscape. Impart your wisdom at the right time.


Without a map, it’s likely that your clients are wandering, lost. Without a carefully laid path and a map, your ability to attract clients, nurture relationships, and close sales is limited. Shortcuts, as in all archetypal journeys, typically spell disaster.









These days, most health and wellness business leaders that I talk with simply don’t have enough business. Most have a critical gap in their customer journey. Some “can’t afford” to get the help they need to fix their funnel. They muddle along, doing more of what doesn’t work, but not knowing where to invest their energy. Instead, they may be found:
